In Autumn and Spring each year, we have weekend fly-ins to far flung places of interest throughout Australia.
13, 14, 15, 16 March 2020
AUTUMN fly-in 2020
Our next fly-in to Canberra coincides with the annual Canberra Festival period which gives us plenty of options to enjoy the various attractions available.
There will be a bit of flexibility for those that want to tailor their experience to some degree as not all attractions are “mandatory”. Here are some ideas of what we could be doing:
Friday 13 March 2020
We all fly-in to Dick Smiths private property on the outskirts of Canberra. Please note there are strict Fly Neighbourly rules which will be emailed to all pilots.
Transfers to the Mecure in Aislie, just east of the main Civic Shopping centre. A casual dinner has been arranged at the Mecure.
The Mecure is taking bookings now. The rooms are $159/night which includes breakfast for (ONE PERSON). Breakfast for the 2nd person for each booking is $19.
Please call Jasmine (Reservations Manager) on 02) 6243 0012 and ensure you let them know you are with the Cessna 182 Association Block Booking.
Saturday 14 March 2020
An optional transfer to the lawns of old Parliament house to witness the Balloon festival for the early risers. This will happen from 6 to 9am. Balloon rides will also be available to purchase.
The rest of us will be transferred to the War Memorial (which is a short walk for those who prefer to do so). The War Memorial is a big deal. There is a lot to see, and many participants will want to spend most of the day there.
For those wanting to spend a few hours at the WM, rather than the whole day, we have arranged a brief sight seeing tour of Canberra and shuttle service to the shopping centre for those wanting some free time. Mini buses will work on a timetable which will be distributed.
The Gala Dinner will be held at the National Museum of Australia on Acton Peninsula Lake Burley Griffin. Mid way through the evening we will breakout to the front of the venue in prime position to enjoy a 20 minute “Sky Fire” fireworks spectacular.
Sunday 15 March 2020
Parliamentary triangle – you choose. You will be transferred to the 500 metre strip along the Lake Burley Griffin shoreline featuring the National Gallery of Australia, The High Court of Australia, The National Portrait gallery, Questacon (National Science Museum), The National Library of Australia, and The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. Entry fees (if applicable) are at your cost and you decide what you want to see. A shuttle service will be available if you don’t feel like walking between attractions.
Matisse/Picasso at the National Gallery (NGA) – Apart from the standard gallery exhibitions open to all at no cost, the NGA is holding a Matisse/Picasso exhibition. This is a rare opportunity to see the works of these 2 Masters in one big display. We will arrange tickets for those interested.
After a break and dinner at the Canberra Yatch Club, you will be transferred back to the Parliamentary triangle to witness “Enlighten” where all the major buildings are spectacularly lit up in the most imaginative ways. There will be a carnival atmosphere with lots of entertainment and stalls as thousands of Canberrans come out to enjoy the mild Autumn conditions – while they still can!
